NCP car park in Leicester-St Nicolas circle.
On the 2nd of November 2018, myself and two of my careers went into the centre of Leicester, to carry out Christmas shopping for my family. We took my car, which is a minibus size transporter. which I access from the rear of the vehicle. At the time we didn’t know whether we could park in the main high cross car park, due to the hight restrictions.
Which meant we had to park even further away from our destination due to the hight restriction. Parking at the NCP car park meant a long walk in the cold and rain. The NCP car park in st Nicolas circle is a massive multi story car park with nearly 700 spaces for people to use.

When we arrived at the car park, we drove round looking for a disabled bay. We really tried to hunt one down due to the importance’s of the space. While we were looking for a disabled bay we realised that even if there was a suitable space on a high floor we could not park there due to the fact of there is no lift! This would of meant we would of had to use the road to push me down the car park which is completely unsafe and unacceptable to ask of my careers. Not only for myself and other disabled people but for the many elderly people that need the benefit of a lift and not to forget mother’s with pushchairs. Due to this development we had to risk the High Cross car park. Now luckily we managed to fit under the restriction but only just! If we couldn’t of then this meant we would of had to come back home. Which to me is unacceptable!
When we did further research into st Nicolas circle car park we found out that out of nearly 700 spaces only 3 of them where disabled. These was positioned at the exit of the carPark. Then was also normal size spaces, which would of meant even more struggling to get myself in and out of the vehicle safely. Also this was dangerous due to the positioning of the bay, as this was right next to the exit barrier. Finally we had only noticed these when we was leaving to go to another car park. This could of been prevented if the signage was more accurate and there was more/ appropriate disabled parking.
If you are reading this blog and feel the same feel free to write about my incident on social media to hopefully try and raise awareness of NCP’s lack of disability co-operation. If you have any stories which you would like to share with me then please email myself at- luken1399@gmail.com
